"Windows 7" What's in a name?

Windows VP Mike Nash drew yawns and confusion on Monday when he
confirmed the new OS would be "Windows 7". People were asking "Why 7?"

If you are good at mathmatics you MAY follow this:

Windows 1 & 2
were (in effect) early betas of Windows 3 and got very little use.
Version 3.1 was the first popular OS and was the start of the Bill
Gates monopoly on the computer world.

Version 4 (also referred
to as "9x") was Windows 95. Then came the "minor upgrades" - v4.1 was
Windows 98 and v4.9 was Windows Millenium Edition (ME).

Version 5 was Windows 2000

OK so far? That was the easy bit!

Next
came Microsoft's biggest step forward in usability: Win XP - and still
the most-used version of Windows by a wide margin. But according to M$,
that was just "a minor upgrade". XP was designated version 5.1

Version 6 was Vista, making the next release Version 7 - "or Windows 7"

So
where is the confusion? Nash noted that although the next Windows will
be called "7" and is considered by M$ to be the seventh version of the
operating system, its code will actually be marked as Windows 6.1 -
which is what you will see in the actual version of the product when
you run cmd.exe.

M$ have put themselves in a corner: while Nash
is calling Windows 7 both a "significant" and "evolutionary"
advancement, M$ CEO Steve Ballmer declared that Windows 7 is "Windows
Vista with cleanup in user interface and improvements in performance."

So
now we know: the Windows 7 name is mostly about marketing - and the
release is simply a minor upgrade on Vista - disguised as a major
release.

But why the deception? Easy! M$ find it necessary to
create distance from the sour taste Vista has left in the mouths of
consumers and enterprises - but the small print (v6.1) allows M$ to
quietly reassure developers nervous from the earlier Vista application
and device-driver compatibility headaches which are now mostly
resolved.

Conclusion? I cannot see any reason to get excited
about the Windows 7 release - which would be far more accurately called
"Vista SP3" (Note: SP2 in now in private Beta)

Simple Hack To Download Windows Vista Service Pack 2 From Windows Update Before Official Release

Few days ago I posted about early beta build of Windows Vista SP2 being released to private beta testers, and as usual
we now have a simple hack which allows users to get their hands on this
pre-build of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 before everybody else
directly from Windows Update servers.



Windows Vista SP2

To enable the early download access hack simply follow the procedure as described:


  1. Copy the following batch file code to a text file and save as "Download-Vista-SP2.bat", alternatively you can download this batch file here.

How To Control Mouse Pointer Using Keyboard

If one fine day your mouse stops working and to add insult to the
injury the application you want to use does not support keyboard
navigation, in such a situation you are left with no choice but to make
use of Micrsoft Windows built-in MouseKeys utility to control mouse
pointer using your keyboard and get important work done.

MouseKeys

To launch MouseKeys :


  1. Goto Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel.
  2. From Control Panel, Start “Accessibility Options“.
  3. Goto Mouse Tab.
  4. Check the “Use Mouse Keys” as shown above.

After activating MouseKeys, make sure that the NumLock is on and use the numeric keypad to to control the mouse pointer, use the "5" key to perform left click.


Alternatively, if you are looking for greater control try MouseMan - A free utility to control the mouse pointer with configurable keys on the keyboard,
in comparison with MouseKeys MouseMan offers better configuration and
smoother mouse movements, the only drawback is that the application is
in German Swedish but you can configure the application using the English tutorial here.

ISROIndia's first unmanned lunar mission Chandrayaan I (Meaning LunarCraft) is scheduled to be launched on 22 October 2008 at 00:50 UTC by India's own Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-XL from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.


With the successful launch of this remote sensing satellite weighing
1304 kg India will become the sixth country to send any type of lunar
mission in space, Chandrayaan-1 will take approximately eight days to
complete its nearly 3,86,000 km long journey for reaching into its
final orbit 100 km from the moon, Chandrayaan-1 will carry a high
resolution remote sensing equipment for visible, near infrared, soft
and hard X-ray frequencies. Over a two-year period, it is intended to
survey the lunar surface to produce a complete map of its chemical
characteristics and 3-dimensional topography. The polar regions are of
special interest, as they might contain water ice.

a beautiful girl... Monty collapses unconscious.
On further probe, he finds out; the mansion belonged to a certain Ravi
Verma, who died in a tragic accident. Another flash back reveals that
Monty was Ravi Verma in his previous life, married to a beautiful girl
called Kamini. Monty now has the grave realization of having been
reborn in his current persona. His beautiful love interest (Tina) is
none other than Kamini's foster daughter. From here starts Monty's new
journey.
A journey of enthralling vengeance, which he unleashes on Kamini. In
close connivance with her wicked accomplice Sir Juda, Kamini had
murdered Ravi to take over his estate, leaving his family helpless
after his death.
To repay the debt he owed them for all their suffering, Monty now
brings his mother and sister out from the dark recesses of their life;
he also reunites with Tina and culminates his incomplete love from a
previous life.
Monty thus absolves himself; of all the Karzzzz he was reborn with...

Drive around Google Maps and Find your path

Its one of the most interactive Mashup of Google maps I have seen till now. They call it as Google Drive where you can select a location and a small car appears in the map. Now you can use your keyboard to drive that car from one place to another.The car wont let you move out of the road which makes it more realistic.

Well its not going to help you find roads but lets say you try to drive from one location of your city to home and see if you know the roads exactly. May be you can ask your kid to use it so he can learn the roads better.!!! Drive your way on Google Drive

Sound stops working on Dell laptop / computer [ Solution ]

Due to some explained reason my sound disappears and stops working on my dell laptop sometimes. I cant hear anything none of the audio device seems to be working. I tried playing the music but nothing, all I used to do was a restart. But today I found a simple solution which can make the sound working again in like 2 seconds ?.

Here are the steps :

  • Type Services.msc in the run dialog box [ Win Key + R ]
  • This will open all the services running in your computer.
  • Look for Windows Audio Services.
  • Select it and restart from the button that’s availble in top menu.
  • Play a music or anything with sound and you will see it working again.

This is the best and easy way to re gain your sound without restarting. I am using Windows Vista but this should be same in Xp or any other windows machine.

Monitor your network activity on Keyboard Num or Scroll Lock

How many times you had bend on side or back to find if your network cable is plugged in and its blinking ? probably many a times which you don’t want to count. Here is pretty useful software which can make your num lock or scroll lock led blink when there is a network activity i.e. keyboard LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) indicating outgoing and incoming network packets on network interface. Its called as Network Lights

Monitor the synchronization between num lock led and modems activity. ( LINK )

You can check the network stats also and set the configuration for Blink Duration. This works both on Windows Xp and Vista

You might have insatlled windows many a time but ever wondered how long your windows installation lasted before you thought it had become very slow and you need to reinstall ? Its easy to find and its windows internals which tells you.

  • Open the command prompt ( type cmd in run prompt )
  • Then type systeminfo in command window

You would see huge data being displayed. Just scroll up a little and look for Original Installed Date on left.

Setting Up Private Browsing Mode In Firefox

Unlike Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8 Firefox does not provide any in-built private browsing mode, However you can setup Firefox for private browsing using a separate profile as demonstrated below:


  1. Goto Windows Start Menu -> Run (or Use Windows Key + R).
  2. Type in firefox -ProfileManager and hit enter.

    3. Firefox profile Manager
  3. Firefox Profile Manager should launch, click the Create Profile button as shown above.
  4. Type in Private as the new profile name.

    5. Firefox Private Surfing Profile
  5. Click Finish to complete the profile creation dialog.
  6. Create a new shortcut on desktop entering the target as firefox -P Private -no-remote (where Private is your profile name).
  7. After Firefox is launched using our new profile, Goto Tools -> Options -> Privacy and check the “Always clear my private data when I close Firefox” and uncheck “Ask me before clearing private data” options.
  8. Now you are ready to enjoy private web-surfing, just use the newly
    created shortcut when you want to browse privately, You can use Normal
    and Private mode firefox windows side-by-side.
  9. You can also install your favorite firefox add-ons like Ad-Blocker and Linkify to your private profile for efficient browsing.
